A fresh new face Original Foods

A fresh new face for one of New Zealand’s biggest baking businesses

New brand and new manufacturing facility in progress for Original Foods Baking Co.

Christchurch, New Zealand: One of New Zealand’s largest privately owned wholesale baked goods manufacturers has marked the company’s 25th year of operation with the launch of a new name and logo to better reflect the company’s range of quality, freshly baked goods and brand personality.

Now known as the Original Foods Baking Co. (formerly Original Foods) with a logo featuring a cheeky monkey licking its lips, the company’s new image will be rolled out across its full range of cakes, donuts, muffins and slices over the coming months.

Original Foods Baking Co’s (OFBC) extensive product range is sold in leading retailers including Countdown, Foodstuffs and all leading Food Service Distributors throughout NZ. OFBC’s muffins and slices are also included on the airline menus of Air New Zealand, Jetstar and Singapore Airlines with the company also exporting its products to the Cook Islands, Samoa and Australia.

The new brand marks a major milestone in the company’s growth strategy, which includes the recent acquisition of a 7,670m2 block of land in Christchurch that will house a new, purpose-built production facility and corporate headquarters, expected to open in late 2016.

After growing up in a family with a home economics lecturer mum (who also ran a cooking school) and a leading scientist for a father, Managing Director of OFBC Jane Clifford never dreamed that her love of baking would result in the company she owns today.

“Our beginnings were certainly humble ones,” Jane said.

“From an initial three staff operation we have grown into a multi-million-dollar turnover business with over 80 staff.

“We remain a proudly 100% New Zealand owned and operated family business with a focus on producing premium quality products at a value price.”

The company sources fresh, local ingredients wherever possible including 100% New Zealand butter, cream, milk, cream cheese, fresh eggs, chocolate and freshly squeezed lemon juice.

The business is community minded too. In 2011 following the devastating Canterbury earthquakes in 2010 that claimed the lives of 185 people, the company produced a red velvet cake known as ‘A Cake for Canterbury’. For every cake sold a donation was made to enhance the parks and recreation areas of the region. Red velvet cake sales are now supporting the Countdown Kids Foundation, where $1 from each cake sold goes to the appeal.

Jane said that despite the company’s progressive steps over the past 25 years, the old brand had become tired and did not reflect the company’s diverse and growing product range.

“Our hundreds of thousands of loyal customers and suppliers love the taste and convenience of our baked goods but the old Original Foods name was no longer representative of the nature or quality of our products. It was also missing the personality of our business, namely the fun and satisfaction we experience as a result of bringing a little bit of happiness into people’s lives.

“Sharing a chocolate cake as part of someone’s birthday celebrations or enjoying a muffin that has been tucked into a lunchbox as a special treat by a loving parent is a wonderful thing.

“Enjoying an occasional, freshly baked sweet treat is one of life’s simple pleasures.

“It was important for us to rebrand with a concept that not only matched the personality of our company and the joy our products brings to others but that also respected our long history and the future direction of our company.

“I think we’ve got the balance just right with the Original Foods Baking Co. and our cheeky, playful monkey logo.

“As well as our current range of goods we have some great new product ideas under development. We’re looking forward to rolling out our new brand with some new lines to complement our existing range of premium baked goods in 2016 as well as building our new premises,” Jane added.
