Iconic Wellington Hotel to undergo multi-million dollar refurbishment

Wellington’s Amora Hotel will temporarily close its doors on 27 May 2017 to undergo a multi-million dollar refurbishment of all rooms and public areas.

The 192 accommodation rooms were last upgraded in 2011, however cosmetic damage from the 14 November 2016 Kaikoura earthquake now requires the hotel to undergo an extensive refurbishment.

General Manager Liam Craughwell says they’ve decided to temporarily close the hotel whilst the refurbishments take place.

“The scope and complexity of the work required to refurbish both front and back of house areas will be significant and would cause considerable disruption to guests and staff. Their comfort is our priority and therefore we decided closing the hotel whilst we do the work was the best way forward.”

The refurbishment will include new guest bathrooms, which currently feature the original marble tiles from the hotel’s construction in the 1980s when it opened as Plaza International Hotel. The hotel had a name change in the 1990s, which saw it rebranded as Duxton Hotel Wellington and again in 2011, it became the Amora Hotel Wellington.

The refurbishment is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2018.

“The significant investment we’re putting into the Amora Hotel’s refurbishment will ensure it remains one of Wellington’s best known hotels and will continue to contribute to the local economy.

“The structural integrity of the building itself is sound. It has been assessed by engineers who have deemed it safe.

However, working with industry experts we identified the scope of work means the hotel would not be able to deliver the level of comfort expected by our guests and it would be a difficult operating environment for our team.

“We look forward to reopening our luxury rooms next year in what is a very buoyant market for hotels in Wellington and New Zealand.”

The owners of Amora Hotel Group operate hotels in Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne, along with three properties in Thailand. Amora Hotels in New Zealand are a key part of their investment portfolio and the owners look forward to a successful refurbishment and reopening next year.
