Double success for Venture Southland staff

It’s not often one organisation in the same city can boast two Queen’s Birthday honours in the same year.

But that was the case for Venture Southland as the passion, effort and achievements of two staff members was recognised when they were appointed members of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Venture’s group manager business and strategic projects Steve Canny was recognised for his services to community, governance and cycling, while engineering projects and ground satellite station manager Robin McNeill was appointed a member for his services to conservation.

Venture Southland chief executive Paul Casson said the double recognition was a fantastic achievement that truly reflected the dedication the two had for their work and community passions.

“We are extremely proud of Steve and Robin. Being appointed a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit is one of the highest accolades to receive so to have two people from Venture Southland recognised is something very special.”

Canny has championed many projects of regional and national significance. More recently his expertise in business development and project management has seen the Wood Energy South pilot programme lauded nationally.

Canny said that after getting over the initial disbelief of his appointment he was deeply honoured. He was also extremely happy to be able to share this success with his long-time colleague.

McNeill was recognised for his strong advocacy of conservation values which have helped to ensure public access to conservation lands.

He was gracious in his award, saying he was slightly mystified, but also delighted to have been selected to receive the honour.

Casson said Venture was fortunate to have people of the calibre of Canny and McNeill on the team.

“It is great for Southland to have Canny and McNeill recognised at this level as it helps to showcase the significant work and achievements of people in the south.”

Both Canny and McNeill said they looked forward to continuing to advocate for their communities in years to come.
