Leading law firm’s strong growth continues

Leading law firm’s strong growth continues

Top tier law firm MinterEllisonRuddWatts will welcome the new year with three new partners and six new senior associates, continuing the national firm’s strong growth in a competitive legal services market.

The firm’s Chair, Lloyd Kavanagh says the promotions bolster the firm’s market leading position and highlights its talent and capability in dispute resolution and corporate law.

"Our latest round of promotions highlight our confidence in our people, and our position as New Zealand Law Firm of the Year (according to Chambers and Partners)," says Lloyd Kavanagh.

"Our firm’s culture celebrates excellence, innovation and diversity. We aim to be the best firm for our clients to work with, and this means having the best people."

The already strong partnership will be boosted with the promotion of John Conlan, Jane Standage and Oliver Skilton to Partner says the firm’s Chief Executive Officer, Mike Schubert.

"All three of the new partners bring international experience and demonstrate the values we like at MinterEllisonRuddWatts - collaboration, openness and commercial savvy," says Mike Schubert.

Starting with the firm as a Law Clerk, John Conlan initially advised in the Banking and Financial Services team before heading to London to work at Herbert Smith. Since returning to MinterEllisonRuddWatts, John has advised on numerous significant projects as a corporate lawyer and in an acting General Counsel and Company Secretary role during a 14-month secondment to Z Energy. John’s expertise includes mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, structured finance and commercial contracting.

"Technically and commercially astute, John has a proven record of managing complex transactions. He has assisted both local and international corporate and financial institutions to structure and complete domestic and cross border transactions," says Mike Schubert.

Jane Standage began her impressive legal career as a Judge’s Clerk at the Court of Appeal and then practised as junior to David Goddard QC. After completing her LLM at New York University on a Fulbright scholarship and Hauser Global scholarship, she went on to gain further litigation experience at Allen & Overy in London and another top tier firm in New Zealand. She joined MinterEllisonRuddWatts in January 2017. Jane has extensive experience in banking and financial services litigation, class action disputes, complex contractual disputes, professional negligence claims and disputes involving issues of companies and securities law.

"Jane has proven to be an excellent addition to our dispute resolution team. She has built a solid reputation as a first class lawyer with excellent technical skills, and has a proactive and innovative approach to achieve positive outcomes for her clients," says Mike Schubert.

A graduate of Auckland University, Oliver began his legal career in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution team at another top tier firm. He gained significant further litigation experience in roles with Clayton Utz in Sydney and Clyde & Co in London. Returning home to New Zealand, he chose MinterEllisonRuddWatts to continue his commercial litigation practice. His work spans regulatory investigations, contractual, shareholder and intellectual property disputes and consumer-related issues.

"Oliver has proven himself to be a lawyer of outstanding technical ability. He has also built strong and enduring relationships with clients - a recent secondment to a key client is one example where he was able to grow his understanding of the environment in which it operates," says Mike Schubert.

The firm is also proud to announce six new senior associates, having promoted the next generation lawyers in recognition of their talent.

Congratulations to Maria Collett-Bevan, John Fowler, Elena Kim, Briar Richardson, Alisaundre van Ammers and Wendy Wang.

The internal promotions will take effect on 1 January 2018, and are subject to satisfying the New Zealand Law Society’s requirements.
