Radio Audience Survey to exclude Waikato

GfK: Radio Audience Measurement Survey 1 2018 results to exclude Waikato

New Zealand, April 30, 2018 – The Radio Broadcasters Association and GfK announced today that coverage for the next GfK Radio Audience Measurement survey results scheduled to be released on May 3 will exclude the Waikato area. This is due to severe damage caused by a localised weather event to the main radio transmission tower at Ruru, affecting broadcasting since late September 2017.

The damage occurred during the final wave of the last radio audience measurement survey in 2017 and the industry made the decision then to suspend the radio audience measurement fieldwork for Waikato. It has been difficult to establish the impact of lower power transmission because of inconsistent coverage; affecting the ability to accurately sample and reflect the listening behavior for the Waikato market.

The industry had hoped to be able to announce the timeline for the repairs today but there are a number of factors that are still awaiting resolution, it may be a few more weeks before the expected date for the return of full powered broadcast can be confirmed.

It will be made very clear, with the release of Survey 1 2018 on May 3, that any survey results that relate to Waikato (including the Total NZ result) are less current than all other markets i.e. that the results have been rolled over from the survey prior to the weather event, Survey 3, 2017.

The RBA is committed to full transparency with the industry about this temporary transmission issue.
