Star Wars Film to face strike action tonight at Event Cinemas

Tonight, Unite Union advises Star Wars fan to go elsewhere instead of Event cinemas for the midnight premiere of Han Solo.

Union members have voted to authorise strike action over a low offer of wages from the company.

Asina Crawford, a cinema attendant and university student from St Luke’s in Auckland says “When I go to work I feel like a tool, not a valued employee. We are being exploited by working for less than we are worth and giving more to the company than we receive.”

Hannah Shelton Agar, the Cinemas organiser for Unite Union, says that "workers in the industry have seen their margins for skill and service undermined over many years. It's time that stopped," she said.

Event Cinemas is the largest cinema company in New Zealand.
