New Supermarket opens in Niue
Shopping just got a whole lot easier for Niue locals and visitors! With the investment of New Zealand-owned family company W.H. Grove and Sons (WHG), who purchased Swansons in 2007, the island will officially open the doors to its brand-new supermarket, Swansons on June 16.
In addition to Swansons, Niue will also welcome a brand new retail and business hub. The opening of the new complex means that island-goers can shop in ultimate style, with Swansons supermarket being the largest and most modern of its kind in Niue.
The entire retail Hub will cover 1500sq metres of retail space and 1000sq metres of warehouse space. It will include the Niue Bond Store for liquor sales, built for and leased to the Niue government by Swansons, as well as retail office outlets (due for opening end of July), parking facilities, a secure children’s playground and an outdoor area for the community’s use.
This has all been made possible through the long-term relationship W.H. Grove and Sons has with Niue and its government, through whom Swansons are leasing the land where the new complex sits.
The supermarket was built by WHG to meet the growing business demands in Niue and will finally begin trading after many years of preparation. As one of the first companies to establish trading relationships with the island in the 1900s, WHG is proud to have journeyed with Niue from sail-boat trading to checkouts and chillers.
Swansons General Manager, Amanda Pita, is proud of the history they have with Niue and says they’re grateful to Premier Sir Toke Talagi and the Niuean Government for the opportunity to lease the land.
“Before currency was available, WHG owned two sailing vessels that traded between the islands of the South West Pacific and New Zealand. Trade was mainly carried out using the barter system back then with cans of bully beef being an essential part of most transactions” she says.
Director of Niue Tourism, Felicity Bollen, says the
investment by W.H Grove in a new supermarket and shopping
facility shows the commitment the company has
“They have been an important commercial partner to Niue for over 100 years and since they first started trading, they’ve been the business that’s supported Niue through many challenges,” she says.
“Through natural disasters and depopulation, they have been the business that has remained loyal to Niue steadfastly providing aid and relief during Cyclone Heta in 2004 and sticking by us when our population dropped dramatically following the devastation of Cyclone Ofa in 1990.”
Swansons supermarket will also become more than a store for locals once it opens. While the Hub has earned its name as the largest private sector employer in Niue, it promises to encourage local employment by sticking to its proud 100% Niuean operated slogan.
The Niuean community has been a great support to the new developments and Managing Director, John Heise, says they plan on returning the favour.
“Swansons will engage in all aspects of the community, sponsorship and training initiatives for students” he says.
“With the new Hub, there will be a focus on the development of Niue and wellbeing of the community. Throughout our history competitive pricing and the best possible services to our customers has been the cornerstone of our business.”
Before the official opening of Swansons supermarket, customers will be invited to attend a public open day where they will be able to walk through the store on Thursday 14 June between 2-3.30pm. The supermarket will officially open to the public on 18 June.
