The land and building housing the
Wanganui branch of the Returned Services Association and its
underground shooting range have been placed on the market
for sale.
The Wanganui RSA has been operating from its St Hill Street premises in the heart of Wanganui for some 100 years. However, an ageing and declining membership base meant the venture was no longer viable long-term, and club members voted in May to amalgamate their operations with the Wanganui Cosmopolitan Club.
Now the Wanganui RSA property at 170 St Hill Street is being marketed for sale by tender through Bayleys Wanganui, with tenders closing at 2pm on July 31.
Bayleys Wanganui salespeople Russell Duggan and Robert Scott said that in addition to the land and building on offer for sale, the Wanganui RSA would also look at selling the venue’s fit out and chattels associated with sustaining a food and beverage business. The Wanganui RSA is moving out of the site in September
The Sl Hill Street property consists of a 1,570 square metre building sitting on 1,885 square metres of freehold land. Included within the land is sealed car parking for 23 vehicles. The venue is located one block back from Wanganui’s main retail strip, Victoria Avenue.

“For any new owner or business entrepreneur looking to establish a hospitality-based venture in Wanganui, the property can be purchased in a ‘ready-to-go state’,” Mr Duggan said.
“With the benefit of new décor, furnishings and potential theming, the premises could easily re-emerge as a modern restaurant and bar either aligned to one the big breweries or as a ‘free-house’ entity.
“Alternatively, there is the potential to retain just some of the site to sustain a hospitality entity, and convert surplus floorspace into commercial office usage.”
Gaming machines in the premises have already been removed and the associated gaming licenses have handed back to the Department of Internal Affairs.
The building housing the Wanganui RSA in St Hill Street is in three parts, which have New Build Standards ratings of between nine and 131 percent.
The Wanganui Returned Service Association is the second RSA branch to announce the sale of its assets in recent weeks – with the land and buildings formerly housing the Manurewa RSA in Auckland also going on the market through Bayleys.
