Kiwibank to honour Skylight Trust CE Heather Henare

Kiwibank to honour Skylight Trust CE Heather Henare

Earlier this year Chief Executive Heather Henare was honoured as a local hero medalist in the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year awards and went on to be selected for the top ten semi-finalists.

Kiwibank Manners Street has undergone some renovations, creating new meeting spaces within the branch. Building on tradition, when creating these new spaces, Kiwibank pays tribute to the Local Heroes who have contributed to New Zealand by naming meeting rooms after them. Kiwibank Local Hero Awards honoured forty Medals in Wellington alone.

As a Local Hero nominee for 2018 Kiwibank Manners Street is naming a meeting room “Heather Henare”, to acknowledge Heather’s dedication to the care and protection of women, children, young people, whānau and friends who are navigating through difficult times.

Heather’s passion and experience has been a long commitment to domestic and sexual violence, care and protection and the care advocacy of our most vulnerable children and young people. Her ten-year leadership in Women’s Refuge was instrumental; in significant legislative change and policies in family violence. In 2015 Heather indicated a change in direction to take up the role Skylight Chief Executive. Heather has focused Skylight on the trauma informed care that is not only understanding the what but also facilitating the voice of why. Too often voices are lost in translation their needs overlooked and their safety compromised because we haven’t asked why or what’s happening for you right now?

Skylight supports children, young people, whānau and communities to build resilient lives and to navigate through adversity. Skylight Trust offers counselling support, information, and guidance through suicide, grief, loss and trauma, supporting over 16,000 New Zealanders each year.

Heather Henare says she is humbled to be acknowledged alongside many other outstanding finalists who give their time and energy to make Aotearoa a better place for all people.
