New Zealand takes Australasian Auctioneering Championship

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) is delighted to announce that Andrew North from Harcourts Cooper & Co is the winner of the 2018 Australasian Auctioneering Championships for the second time.

Andrew brings the trophy home to New Zealand after the cup being in Australia for the past three years. Andrew beat 16 other competitors to take out the top gavel in the 20th edition of the Australasian Auctioneering Championships.

Bindi Norwell, Chief Executive at REINZ says: “Congratulations to Andrew on being awarded the title of the best auctioneer in Australasia – the calibre of this year’s entrants was extremely high, and it was an incredibly tough competition. Tonight’s win is something Andrew can be extremely proud of – especially considering the difficult bidding sequence competitors were set by our Chief Judge.

“Thanks to our platinum event partner Property Press, Gavl who livestreamed the event for us and to all our other partners. We couldn’t run this event without your fantastic support,” continues Norwell.

Mark Sumich, Chief Judge says: “Over his years in the competition, ‘Northy’ has made the finals seven times, so there is no one who deserves to win it more than him. He constantly seeks to improve himself, is tremendously humble and he is New Zealand’s barometer of what a consistent performance in auctioneering looks like – if you can’t match him then you’re not going to win.”

Commenting on his win, Andrew North says: “I just go out to do the best job for my customers and my company so I’m extremely grateful, happy, proud and relieved to have won. It’s an endorsement from the auctioneering community that I’m heading down the right path in terms of my style, and it’s good to ensure I’m remaining accurate, current and to test myself against the best in Australasia.”

Vincent Doran from Underdale High School in South Australia was the winner of the 2018 Schools Auctioneering Championship.

“I was extremely impressed by the skill and courage displayed by all of our competitors in the Schools Championship. They can all go back to their respective schools with their heads held high that they gave their all throughout the competition. Congratulations to Vincent – he gave a magnificent performance today at the Q Theatre that was sharp, accurate and with the right dose of humour. His performance clearly impressed the judges and was enough to clinch the win,” continues Norwell.

Commenting on the Schools Championship Sumich says: “Throughout his call Vincent delivered the intensity and desire of an auctioneer that wanted to win. He was sharp, accurate with his maths and had the appropriate levels of humour. When you combine those traits with the uncanny knack of excellent delivery and timing. I knew he would do extremely well, so congratulations to him, and I look forward to seeing him in senior competition in the near future.”
