All Blacks take on Air New Zealand’s travel game

The All Blacks have put their off-field skills to the test in London, playing Air New Zealand’s new multi-player mixed reality game ‘Air New Zealand Fact or Fantasy Game of New Zealand’.

After wrapping up the Vista Northern Tour at the weekend players Angus Ta’Avao, Patrick Tuipulotu and Waisake Naholo, alongside Coach Steve Hansen stopped by Framestore – the global creative studio the airline worked with to develop the immersive New Zealand-themed board game – to play a round or two.

The game sees players wear Magic Leap One to view a physical 3D map of New Zealand and they are transported to a magical world where they meet a grumpy Hobbit, get splashed by a breaching whale, and have a bird’s eye view of a helicopter bungy jump. Players answer quiz questions to compete for golden eggs.

Magic Leap One Creator Edition is a lightweight, wearable computer that allows digital content to step out of the screen and into the real world. Magic Leap’s technology layers digital objects onto the real world so that light enters the eye as it would with a real object. This means users can see jaw-dropping detail up close and mind-blowing scale from afar.

The airline’s General Manager of Global Brand and Content Marketing, Jodi Williams, says as a sponsor of the All Blacks it was fun to be able to give them a taste of the technology and what it might mean for the future of travel.

“The game we’ve created is incredibly immersive, with players able to experience a mixed reality world – with the quiz questions it creates a bit of healthy competition too.

“The All Blacks are no strangers to long-haul travel, being able to show them this incredible platform from which we are exploring the potential of this technology, hopefully excites them about what’s to come for the future of flying.”

Magic Leap, Chief Business Officer, Rachna Bhasin says Air New Zealand and Framestore both have impressive track records in the early adoption of emerging technologies.

“We love working alongside partners with an appetite for exploration and innovation to see how they leverage Magic Leap to bring their creative visions to life.

“Watching the All Blacks engaging with each other while experiencing the best of New Zealand from central London has been a highlight as to the power of this new medium for storytelling.”
