Australia leads visitor arrivals

There were 385,800 visitor arrivals in November 2018, up 25,600 from the same month last year, Stats NZ said today.

• United States, up 3,200
• Taiwan, up 1,800

New series on New Zealand-resident traveller arrivals

“Following the removal of the departure card, Stats NZ has changed focus to measure resident traveller arrivals rather than departures,” population insights senior manager Brooke Theyers said. “This means that statistics are based on a resident traveller’s return from an overseas trip, rather than on their departure.”

In November 2018, 221,800 New Zealand residents arrived back from an overseas trip, up 7,400 from November 2017.

Australia was the most popular destination for New Zealand resident travellers, with 105,100 returning from there in the November 2018 month. Other popular destinations were:

• United States, 15,100
• Fiji, 11,700
• China, 9,300.

In the year ended November 2018, 3.0 million New Zealand-residents arrived home from a trip overseas.
