74-Year-Old Bottle of Wine Going to Auction with $4,000 Reserve

A bottle of wine produced the year World War Two ended is going up under the hammer in Auckland this month at the first live auction held by The Wine Auction Room.

Bidding for the 1945 Chateau Latour will start at $4,000 but previous sales of the sensational red have reached as much as $9,000 internationally.

The Wine Auction Room, established by wine maven Reece Warren last year, has held a number of very successful online auctions but the event on Wednesday, 13 March, will be the company’s first live auction. It will be held at Glengarry, Victoria Park, at 6.30pm and streamed live on www.wineauctionroom.com

Reece says: “We have sourced some exceptional wines from a wide range of vendors across the country and they are sure to be of great interest to all wine connoisseurs. The star of the show is undoubtedly the $4,000 bottle of 1945 Chateau Latour - a dynamic French red from one of the best vineyards in the world.”

“But there are some exceptional wines from our part of the world too, including Henschke’s Hill of Grace, a premium Australian Shiraz grown on a vineyard with over 155 years of history, Penfolds Grange, and vintage Te Mata Coleraine from Hawke’s Bay, which has been labelled a Wine Legend by Decanter magazine.

“We also have 1959, 1993, 1999 and 2000 Chateau Lafite Rothschild and many other First Growths from Bordeaux. That 1959 vintage was rated 20 out of 20 by famed British Master of Wine Jancis Robinson, who advises on the Queen’s wine cellar. Champagnes on offer include vintage Dom Perignon.”

Reece says, along with the star performers, there are plenty of affordable wines on offer, with reserves starting at $16. “Our first live auction really does include a wine for everyone, whatever your taste or budget. We’d like to invite people to come along and look for something delicious to buy as well as enjoy an entertaining night out.”

If you can’t make it in person, The Wine Auction Room also accepts online, telephone and absentee bids but bidders must register first via the website.

Reece is the son of legendary Auckland music promoter Phil Warren and has always worked in hospitality and the wine industry. “I’ve been surrounded by alcohol all my life. I worked in dad’s Ace of Clubs nightclub from the age of 16 and remember seeing and meeting a number of international artists.”
