Pylones Aims To Bring Fun Into Every Day Life

Media Release 20 November 2008

Australasia’s First Pylones Store Aims To Bring Fun Into Every Day Life

Fancy a kitchen whisk that resembles a squid? Or perhaps a dish brush shaped like a person? Cooking and cleaning will never be the same again with the opening of Australasia’s first Pylones store in New Zealand.

"The concept behind the range is every day products that make you smile and feel happy. It’s about tapping into that joy we feel playing as children and making usually mundane tasks fun," says storeowner Linda Hutchings.

Hutchings first saw Pylones products while travelling in Paris. She bought a few pieces for herself and quickly found the signature quirky nature of the range was popular with friends and family.

Hutchings, who has a background in interior and architectural design, started importing the products and selling them online in 2005 under the name of Jolé. It was the success of this online store that led her to re-brand to Pylones New Zealand and open her own destination store, which will be the thirty-second Pylones store worldwide.

Based in Paris, Pylones (which means ‘energy’) was started by a group of designers in 1985 to create a range of fun items people can use every day. The range of products includes gadgets for the home, from kitchen and bathroom to office and living room such as fun dustpans, ice cream scoops, kitchen graters, cake servers, luggage tags, wallets, umbrellas and more.

Although the brightly coloured playful Pylones products resemble children’s toys they are also incredibly practical – something Hutchings says was an important consideration in her decision to open the store.

"The products are fun but also sturdy, durable and robust. I didn’t want anything gimmicky; I wanted products that would last," she says.

Hutchings says Pylones stores are renown as destination shops the world over. Her store has been designed by Pylones and will follow the signature colourful and fun look of the international stores with imaginative and inventive window displays and inside an amazing haven of colour and creatively displayed Pylones product. Hutchings plans to open a store in Australia next year.

"As far as design goes I think we have gone for the minimalist look for too long and a lot of people are becoming tired of this and want colour again. Pylones makes it possible to buy something small to brighten up your day because after all everyone needs a bit more fun and energy in their lives."

The store is open from 9.30am until 5.30pm Monday to Friday, 10am until 5pm Saturday and 10am until 4pm Sunday. Pylones products can be purchased either in store or on-line at www.pylones-newzealand.com
