Framework honoured for sustainable business

Framework, a community mental health and intellectual disability provider, last night won the prestigious Trailblazer Not for Profit Award at the 2011 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards held in Auckland.

Framework Chief Executive Officer, Dr Colin Hayes, said the Sustainable Business Network Awards were presented in front of a ‘who’s who’ of New Zealand’s most sustainable businesses, Auckland Mayor Len Brown, and several senior politicians from across the political spectrum.

Three national finalists competed in the not-for-profit category, each of which were “non-profit organisations that have ensured sustainability is a strategic part of their entire operations, products and services.” Framework competed against Victoria University of Wellington and The Tauranga City Council. Framework gained entry into the National competition through being the winner of the Trailblazer Not for Profit Award in the 2011 Northern Regional SBN Awards.

Dr Hayes said former Waitakare Mayor Bob Harvey, one of Framework’s original Trustees and a presenter at the awards ceremony, expressed his delight and pride at Framework’s success. The full list of winners and judges' commendations at the award ceremony follow:

• Sustainability Champion Award – Winner: Pippa Coom - Grey Lynn Farmers Market, Cycle Action Auckland
• Social Innovation Award – Winner: 350 Aotearoa; Judges' Commendation: Kaibosh
• People’s Choice Award – Winner: Westpac New Zealand Limited

Dr Hayes told the audience at the awards: “I am extremely proud to be the CEO of Framework. We are a medium-sized organisation with a huge heart. All of the Framework staff are outstanding, continually demonstrating the very best of services in partnership with our consumers.

“We admit to having been somewhat daunted by having the Victoria University of Wellington and Tauranga City Council as the fellow finalists in our award category, as they are two outstanding organisations that we simply don’t match in terms of size and scope.“

The Sustainable Business Network Award Judges comments regarding Framework included:

• Its sustainability influence leveraged through its networks.

Northern SBN Awards:

• Framework has an excellent understanding and articulation of the challenges facing them. Led by a really great vision and integrative, practical approach, their commitment and action on a range of sustainability initiatives is very impressive.

• Especially impressed to see the continued development of their organic city gardens, the high levels of community engagement, the encouraging of clients to volunteer in the community, the commitment and action dedicated to making travel more sustainable, the recycling of waste and water saving initiatives, extensive staff training, and the collaborative approach taken to extending core services to sustainability.

Dr Hayes also thanked Wright Communications as sponsors of the Trailblazer Not for Profit Award, and NZI as the Principal Sponsor of the awards.

“We are grateful for the tremendous support and guidance that the Sustainable Business Network provides businesses like Framework. The lives of every New Zealander are being greatly enhanced by the sensible and inspiring leadership of SBN,” Dr Hayes said.
