What’s My Duty? iPhone app available
Customs’ What’s My Duty? iPhone app is now available for download. This follows the successful launch of the What’s My Duty? Android app last week.
Initial statistics show the Android app is being downloaded and used locally as well as in Australia, China and India.
Customs’ Group Manager Trade & Marine, Paul Campbell, is pleased with the results and with the growing popularity of the same web-based duty estimator www.whatsmyduty.org.nz which has had close to 22,000 visitors to the site since its launch last month.
“Customs wants to make things easier for online shoppers, travellers and importers. People buying overseas should be aware that they could have to pay import duty and GST for their shopping. This calculation is now available at their fingertips from anywhere in the world,” Mr Campbell says.
“There is a common misconception that all goods purchased online from overseas websites for less than NZ$400 can come into New Zealand without incurring any duty, GST, or charges. This is incorrect and we urge people to use the apps and calculator available to avoid any surprises upon Customs clearance.”
What’s My Duty? allows shoppers to choose from a list of the most common products bought online and calculates the import duty and GST to be paid. If the amount to pay is less than $60, the amount is waived under the de minimis provision of the Customs and Excise Act 1996.
