Freshman Sire Highlights Final Day of Karaka 2013

Freshman Sire Highlights Final Day of Karaka 2013

New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2013 National Yearling Sales Series has drawn to a close today at Karaka with the final 212 yearlings of the Festival Sale concluding a bumper seven days of selling that has seen a total of 1021 lots traded for $72,387,700.

For the third day in a row Westbury Stud’s first season sire Swiss Ace (Secret Savings) provided the top price of the day, this time it was the colt at Lot 1353 from the four-time winning Stravinsky mare Poetic Music bought by Rogerson Bloodstock for $95,000.

“He was the nicest horse here today and he proved that because he was the top lot of the day.

“I think that by next year I’ll have to go to the Premier Sale to buy yearlings buy Swiss Ace. I have backed him with my purchases in the Sale and I think he’s going to make it as a sire.

“Overall I think good horses sell well and they have here at Karaka this week.”

Rogerson also secured the Swiss Ace colt that topped Day 1 of the Festival Sale at Lot 1149, while Tony Pike purchased the top priced lot on the final day of the Select Sale at Lot 1007 for $160,000.

This consolidated the young sprinting sire’s lead at the top of the sire table for this session with 8 of his 12 entries sold at an average of $46,313. This was nearly double the average of the next on the list, Bachelor Duke, with 8 of 12 Festival Sale entries sold at an average of $24,825.

With three of the top ten lots, Graeme Rogerson was the leading individual buyer of the two-day Festival Sale with six yearlings purchased for $339,000 at an average of $56,500. In total, Rogerson has bought 21 horses this week for $1,662,000, with a top price of $200,000 paid for Lot 46 and Lot 165 of the Premier Sale.

Gerry Harvey’s Westbury Stud sold 29 yearlings at the Festival Sale to secure the top spot as vendor by aggregate with $687,500, at an average of $23,707. In total, Westbury has sold 69 horses this week for $4,040,000 at a combined average of $58,551.

Taking over as the leading vendor by average on the final day was Mark & Denny Baker’s Hallmark Stud with three sold for $104,000 at an average of $34,667. This included a top price of $46,000 for Lot 1410, the Any Suggestion colt from the Centaine mare Silver Bec bought by Regal Farm.

With 283 Festival Sale yearlings sold over the past two days, the final turnover is $3,429,200 for this session, with New Zealand buyers accounting for just over $3 million of that aggregate. The final Festival average is $12,117, with a median of $8,000, and a clearance rate of 73%.

This brings total takings for the week to $72,387,700, with 75% of lots sold at a combined average of $70,899 and a median of $40,000.

Particularly encouraging has been the increased domestic spend compared with last year, with an additional 105 horses bought and $2.5 million spent to reach a total of $28.3 million for 635 horses.

NZB Co-Managing Director Petrea Vela says that overall the results of Karaka 2013 have been pleasing.

“It has been a big week of selling, and with some apprehension leading into sales week there’s a sense of relief about how the market has performed and the results achieved given the economic challenges both here and overseas,” commented Vela.

“The crowds and activity at Karaka have been very buoyant right up until the rain came on the last day, and there has been good competition for good horses across every session. We would have liked to have seen a bit more firepower from our domestic market but the slight increase from last year is encouraging. There have been a number of local trainers, owners and syndicators who have stepped up with confidence and we hope that they are well-rewarded.

“We are very grateful to everyone who has participated at Karaka over the past week, we thank them for their support and wish all our buyers the very best of luck with their Karaka purchases.”

It is still possible to make an offer on lots that have passed through the ring this week. To view the list of Passed Lots click here: Premier Sale, Select Sale, Festival Sale. A full summary of combined statistics from Karaka 2013 will be available from Tuesday.
