Wellington Firm Success in Christchurch Competition

Wellington Firm Success in Christchurch Competition

1 March 2013

A Wellington architecture firm is a finalist in an international competition to design a new urban village in Central Christchurch.

Walker Architecture and Design, along with developer partner Ceres NZ, was announced as one of four finalists in the ‘Breathe – new urban village project’ at a ceremony in Christchurch last night.

Principal Roger Walker said he was thrilled that the company had made it to the next step of this important competition.

“I am passionate about the ability of medium density housing to provide for a range of housing options and encourage a strong sense of community,” he said.

“The Breathe project was exciting to work on and we can’t wait to develop the concept further over the next few months.”

Breathe is conceived as a number of living community courts and lanes within the Christchurch grid system. Each court showcases a sustainable and community living solution - low-impact living, communal living, self-sufficient living and local community living.

The quadrangle grid layout; selected materials, and garden centred design echo historical Canterbury development.

Judges praised the scheme for offering a true village feel that is well connected to its surroundings.

Ends.
