New Lynn provides template for compact, affordable Auckland

New Lynn provides template for a quality, compact, affordable Auckland

The Mayor will tonight officially open New Lynn’s new Merchant Quarter precinct, a development Len Brown says provides a template for a quality, compact, affordable Auckland.

The first stage of the quarter features a medical centre, multi storey carpark and upgraded roads.

The next stage includes a 10-storey, 100-apartment tower on top of the carpark which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The tower includes one to two bedroom apartments starting at $246,000 which are now on the market.

Merchant Quarter will be the heart of metropolitan New Lynn, a vibrant centre where people can work, do business, shop and be entertained.

New Lynn is one of ten metropolitan centres where much of our future growth will occur.

“This is an example of how we are developing Auckland so it is ready to meet the challenges of housing a million extra Aucklanders in coming decades, providing affordable homes in a place where people will want to live and work,” says Len Brown.

“The plan is to create mixed use neighborhoods with good parks anchored by great transport and employment hubs which offer a range of higher density housing choices.

By 2030, New Lynn could be home to 20,000 people with another 14,000 working there.”

The key to the success of New Lynn is a transport interchange completed in 2010 which features an award-winning below ground level railway station.

Tonight’s official opening will be followed by a public open day tomorrow (March 9) from 10am-1pm.

“We know the redevelopment work in New Lynn has been challenging for business owners, shoppers and workers and now it’s time to thank people for their patience and celebrate what can only be described as a fantastic end result,” says Len Brown.

The free activities will run in the new McCrae Way, Auckland’s newest shared space street and the second to be built in New Lynn.
