Wellington and Wairarapa’s finest homes revealed

A new home build in Lowry Bay and a renovation in Mt Victoria have been named this year’s top homes, winning Supreme Awards in the Wellington Wairarapa Registered Master Builders 2013 House of the Year.

Planit Construction Limited scooped six regional awards, including the Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for the House of the Year, the Category and Gold Award for the Carters New Homes $1 million - $2 million category and the Craftsmanship Award for the Lowry Bay home.

The company also won a Gold Award in the Future-Proof Building Renovation over $500,000 category for a renovation in Thorndon as well as a second Gold Award in the Carters New Homes $1 million - $2 million category for a home in Melrose.

Wilson Building (Wgtn) Limited was awarded the Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for the Renovation of the Year, as well as winning the Gold Award and Category for the Future Proof Building Renovation Award over $500,000 as well as the Resene Sustainable Home Award for a renovation in Mt Victoria.

Planit Construction Limited’s build impressed judges who said, “Built on one of the steepest sites we have ever seen, the quality of finishing and execution of workmanship in association with the difficult site was extraordinary.

“Working with a minimalist design, there was absolutely no room for tolerances. The combination of materials inside and seamless detailing of exterior finishes alongside an impressive kitchen and staircase and a very clever exterior sunscreen, this home is just amazing.

“This was an incredibly difficult site to build on, and the builder should be given full credit for what he has managed to achieve.”

Judges said Wilson Building (Wgtn) Limited’s winning renovation is a complete restoration of a turn-of-the-century villa involving an extraordinary degree of difficulty.

“The builder’s first six months on this project consisted of removing 1,100 cubic metres of rock from under the existing structure while supporting it on 7 metre high temporary piles, which was a massive undertaking,” they said.

“Successfully retaining the existing character of the home, the builder meticulously executed new exterior cladding and detailed features and trims, recycled timber floors and the introduction of a double storey bay window to match the original home.

“The level of planning and workmanship to complete this project is exceptional – it is a renovation the builder and his client should be very proud of.”

The builders’ entries were recognised by members of the Wellington and Wairarapa Registered Master Builders and the local building industry at Te Papa in Wellington on Friday, 30 August.

There were 15 Gold Award winners from the Wellington and Wairarapa areas which will now be assessed alongside Gold Award winners from the 10 other regions of the competition to find the National Gold Reserve finalists, which will be announced in September.

National category winners and Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for the Renovation of the Year and the House of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland in November.
