THE CHALLENGE
The New Zealand Film Archive Ngā Kaitiaki O Ngā Tonga Whitiāhua is the home of New Zealand’s moving image history with over 150,000 titles spanning feature films, documentaries, short films, home movies, newsreels, TV programmes and advertisements. Established in 1981, the Film Archive is an independent charitable trust overseen by a Board of Trustees representing film, archival, Maori and community interests.

As part of its commitment to reaching audiences nationwide, the Film Archive has an Auckland Office and co-ordinates medianet a network of access sites in art galleries and museums in Dunedin, Christchurch, Otaki, New Plymouth, Hamilton and Whangarei.

While online delivery has proved invaluable in reaching wider audiences, The Film Archive is faced with challenges and compatibility issues transferring an historic analogue collection for online access. Limited in-house IT resource also means they needed an ISP hosting relationship that would ensure expertise was on hand when required. And here is where Modica stepped in.

THE SOLUTION
Modica’s first task with The Film Archive was to move content from their existing unreliable site to a fully managed hosting environment complimented by the Varnish caching system that helps support dynamic and content heavy sites.

The team at Modica ensured Diane Pivac was regularly kept up-to-date with the content migration, ensuring she had confidence in the process.

RESULTS
The result is that Diane and her team can do their jobs seamlessly, without worrying about areas that they are not experts in. Short films and movies are being uploaded with no impact on the site, and if there are any problems Christine Soper (Modica Business Development Manager) and the support team are only ever a phone call or trouble ticket away. This means The Film Archive can continue to focus on their core role of film collection management, preservation and access.
