Auckland Rules the Wine World

An Auckland company has been named as the most successful wine website in the world.

In the 2013 edition of the VinePair Wine Web Power Index, New Lynn-based Wine-Searcher.com is in first place. The Index measures the influence of selected wine websites and mobile apps within the United States – the world’s biggest wine market.

A total of 33 wine-focused companies were analyzed, with Wine-Searcher beating the much longer established Wine Spectator into second place. .

The Wine-Searcher search engine currently lists 5,941,185 wines and prices from 43,523 merchants around the world. It receives an average 3 million unique visitors each month.

The company was launched in 1999 when founder Martin Brown was based in London. In 2006, it was moved to Auckland, where it has continued to go from strength to strength.

In early 2011, Wine-Searcher.com added an online magazine to its huge database of wines. The magazine was shortlisted for Wine Website of the Year 2013 in the prestigious Louis Roederer International Wine Writers’ Awards.

While its head office is in New Zealand, Wine-Searcher publishes wine news, interviews and features from around the world, and has high-profile columnists and contributors around the globe – from California and Champagne to Chile and China.

Wine-Searcher CEO Martin Brown said: “Winning first place in the Power Index is a great affirmation of Wine-Searcher’s success. We aim to make our website the go-to one-stop shop for wine prices and information.”
