Wellington Airport charges indicative of wider problem

Airlines welcome the reduction in charges announced by Wellington Airport today.

The airport’s decision to re-price follows a Commerce Commission review. BARNZ (the Board of Airlines Representatives New Zealand) executive director John Beckett says it is regrettable that the Commission’s review was only a one-off under a transitional provision in the Commerce Act.

“Airlines have been asking the Government for a broader review of legislation covering airport pricing for some time.” Mr Beckett says. “New Zealand has one of the lightest handed regimes for airport pricing in the developed world.”

“An improved regime is the key to getting lower travelling costs for the long term benefit of the travelling public.”
