Today's employment forum findings: preparation of students for work, thinking differently about the transition from education to work

Following The Future of Work in New Zealand Forum in Auckland today with the Recruitment & Consulting Services Association; Grant Robertson, NZ Labour MP, and Spokesperson for Finance and Chair of the Future of Work Commission; and Iain Lees-Galloway, John Harland, Chair RCSA New Zealand Region Council, made the following observations:


1. Key challenges exist around the effectiveness of the preparation of students for work

2. In NZ we need to be thinking differently about the transition from education to work and about the skills and capabilities that our young people are being taught.

3. Despite the digitalisation of the work environment there remains a huge demand for skilled trades, professions and jobs involving human interactions

4. A survey by Manpowergroup of the top 10 global shortages shows:
o Shortage globally is skilled trades
o Sales Rep’s
o Engineers
o Technicians
o Drivers
o IT staff

5. Security of work and employment must coexist within a flexible environment

6. Multiple careers and multiple work opportunities require us to redefine traditional employment models, but to also redefine the skills required and how people work

7. Five years ago we recruited drivers to drive. Today all of the drivers we recruit in our business must be able to drive as well have customer service skills and experience,” said John Harland. “Inter-personal skills will have much greater currency in the future world of work.”
