NZ Restaurants Opt for Cleaner Outdoor Heating Solutions

Since indoor smoking bans were enacted in both NZ and abroad, the outdoor heating market has thrived. The most popular choice for restaurateurs– outdoor, gas powered heat lamps.

As gas area heaters became a staple of every restaurant and bar throughout the U.K. and Europe, the unforeseen consequence of the 2008 smoking ban came to light – massive amounts of CO2 emissions being pumped into the atmosphere.

A gas patio heater with at 12.5kW will produce 34.9kg of CO2 after 12 hours of running (when the fuel runs out). This is the equivalent to the amount of energy required to make 5,200 cups of tea.

In an effort to combat climate change, the European Union enacted a ban on outdoor gas heaters throughout the continent and the U.K.

However, these bans have caused a stoush between European politicians and restaurant owners, the most vocal of these being café and bar owner in the French capital, Paris. Café owners argued that the ban was killing the city’s popular café culture. Ultimately winning the argument, the ban was over turned and gas heaters continued to burn bright.

Fortunately, Kiwi restaurant and bar owners have been much more forward thinking when it comes to their outdoor heating solutions.

A rising trend among NZ bars and restaurant is the fixed overhead electric heater.

“After smoking indoors was banned, there was a lot of cheap, low quality gas lamps flooding the market”, comments Kelvin Davis, founder of Auckland based, Kelray Heating.

“However, once operating these products, many business owners found them very inefficient and expensive to run. Also, many of these overseas made lamps were produced using cheap materials and a low standard of workmanship”.

Kelray saw the opportunity to produce a NZ made range of outdoor electric heaters which utilise the incredibly efficient infrared heating technology.

Unlike heat produced from gas heaters, which simply work to heat the open air, Kelray’s heaters, use infrared technology to pass through the air and be absorbed directly by the skin, ensuring minimal wastage.

While there are a number of infrared heaters coming onto the Market, Kelray’s range of commercial heaters are the only heaters manufactured in NZ using marine grade 316 stainless steel.

“As a NZ business, we are proud to supply a product that is energy efficient and minimises impact on the environment”.

“Many people are simply not aware of the environmental impact of these outdoor gas heaters. Our clients are always happy to learn that not only are they saving in heating costs, but they are also reducing their businesses carbon footprint”.
