Laidlaw comments on launch of the Dairy Tomorrow strategy

Chris Laidlaw comments on the launch of the Dairy Tomorrow strategy

Chair of the Greater Wellington Regional Council Chris Laidlaw has welcomed the dairy industry’s commitment to sustainability with its new environmental strategy ‘Dairy Tomorrow’.

“This is an ambitious and timely initiative. The dairy industry has a central role to play in improving the state of our environment and our water.

“It commits the industry to moving to sustainable farming. It’s a clear message that many in the community have been waiting to hear and it opens up new opportunities for the industry and regional councils to work together to protect water quality.

“Over the last year or so there has been a welcome convergence of the objectives of councils and dairy organisations and this provides a very constructive platform for agreement on the methods – particularly the non-regulatory methods – that are going to be needed if we are to turn the situation around.

“The Wellington region has a number of waterways with declining environmental health that the council is working to rehabilitate and it makes a big difference when an organisation like Dairy NZ steps up as a committed partner in this. We look forward to working more collaboratively with dairy industry representatives and with farmers on this huge challenge”
