Mosgiel, Dunedin Achieves Motorhome Friendly Town Status

Dunedin is welcoming self-contained motorhome visitors with open arms, as Mosgiel becomes the latest addition to the national Motorhome Friendly Town scheme facilitated by the New Zealand Motor Caravanning Association (NZMCA).

The third Otago location to receive the accreditation, Mosgiel was selected on its proven ability to host large numbers of motorhomes concurrently at sites throughout the town, as well as access to essential facilities such as shopping outlets, petrol stations and dump stations.

Speaking at the accreditation ceremony, Mayor of Dunedin Dave Cull said, “Mosgiel is the ideal location for motorhome visitors, with a mix of rural charm, excellent local amenities and a number of attractions in the local area. The town also makes a great base for exploring Dunedin city and the beautiful surrounding hinterlands.

“It’s clear that this market can provide significant economic benefits to Mosgiel and wider Dunedin area and we look forward to welcoming NZMCA members and other motorhome users to the region”.

The growing market in domestic motorhome owners and international visitors hiring them as transport and accommodation whilst in New Zealand, is estimated to be worth up to $650 million annually.

NZMCA CEO Bruce Lochore said that the accreditation is a win-win result for everyone, “For Mosgiel, official recognition as Motorhome Friendly will encourage more of our members to stop, stay and spend. And for motorhomers, the town’s status as Motorhome Friendly is a clear indication that they can expect a warm welcome”.

The Dunedin events scene includes a number of special interest events which take place on the Taieri, including Wings and Wheels and The Festival of the Plain. These are expected to be another drawcard for motorhome visitors throughout the year.

Motorhome Friendly Town Signage will be displayed at points around Mosgiel and information on appropriate parking places and facilities is available on the NZCMA website.
