New BusinessDesk hire named Business Journalist of the Year

By Pattrick Smellie

Nov. 8 (BusinessDesk) - One of New Zealand's most experienced business journalists, Jenny Ruth, has been named Business Journalist of the Year in the New Zealand Shareholders' Association annual business journalism awards.

Her groundbreaking coverage of abusive internal emails from then Fletcher Building chief executive Mark Adamson was "a standout news story of the year", which was "of great importance and had an impact," the panel of five independent judges said in their commentary.

Jenny Ruth starts work for BusinessDesk next Monday from the National Business Review, where she worked when she broke the Fletcher story.

Also winners last night were Stuff business editor Rebecca Stevenson for her feature coverage, while working at The Spinoff, of the collapse of the cricket information venture CricHQ, which was backed by former Black Caps Stephen Fleming and Brendon McCullum.

Newsroom's Rod Oram won Best Business Commentary for his series analysing Fonterra.

The Spinoff's Madeleine Chapman was named Young Business Journalist of the Year.

The five judges for the award, which carries no corporate sponsorship, were Gavin Ellis, a former New Zealand Herald editor-in-chief turned media academic; Merja Myllylahti, a former London-based financial journalist and current journalism academic; Richard Harman, a political journalist of 40 years’ experience in radio, television and now the daily political newsletter, Politik; Jane Arnott, a communications and marketing consultant; and Garth Ireland, a senior financial analyst.
