Flowers from the petrol forecourt are fine for Valentine’s Day according to Kiwis.

Kiwis giving the gift of flowers this Valentine’s Day say they don’t need to come from a florist, as nearly 81% of New Zealanders are happy to buy flowers from the petrol station.

It was also revealed in a new survey that 68% of people did not think their partner would know the flowers came from a petrol forecourt.

The results come from G.A.S. Petrol Service Stations who surveyed 346 Kiwis to see what their attitude was towards gifts and last-minute purchases for the most romantic day of the year. While 49% are happy to buy flowers from the petrol station anytime, 32% said they would only do it if they could not buy them from anywhere else.

When it comes to last minute present buying 26% of responders admitted to leaving buying gifts to the day before or the day itself. The most popular destination for a last-minute panic present was the supermarket where 52% of people said they prefer to go, with 21% opting for the florist and 12% for the petrol station.

“I think most of us at some point have had to make a last-minute dash to buy a present, and we wanted to see where people go and how they feel about the gifts they buy,” said Kylie Baudet, Head of Marketing at G.A.S.

34% of those taking the survey admitted to forgetting to buy their partner a card or a gift at some point, but just 12% said they had forgotten an important date such as an anniversary.

“We received a lot of personal stories and it clearly is a day that means a lot to people,” adds Kylie. “I think the main thing we learned from this is that if you want to make a big gesture you can, but it’s not expected. Just let your loved one know you are thinking about them.”

When asked to score the effort they make for Valentine’s Day, the average rating a person gave themselves was 6.5. However, 33% gave themselves a score of 8 or higher compared to just 6.5% who scored themselves a 3 or lower.
