CLEAR Net creates virus detection tool for Internet users

CLEAR Net has created a free detection programme to hunt dangerous Trojan viruses – such as the fast-spreading BackOrifice – which lurk unnoticed on Internet users’ computers.

The new service, available through the CLEAR Net web site, takes about two minutes to scan a user’s computer over the Internet and detect Trojan viruses. CLEAR Net is one of the first Internet service providers to develop this tool and make it available free of charge to its customers.

Trojan viruses are generally spread in executable programmes transmitted via e-mail attachments or on floppy disks. Some of the better known Trojan viruses are BackOrifice and NetBus.

BackOrifice can potentially be used by a hacker to take ongoing control of a PC connected to the Internet. An unscrupulous user could use this remote control to steal confidential documents and passwords, monitor use of the computer from anywhere in the world, control cameras and other attachments or destroy data.

CLEAR Net has introduced the free detection service in response to growing public concern over the spread of such viruses, particularly as Y2K approaches. CLEAR Net recommends that all Internet users have up-to-date virus protection software.
