No-One To Miss Out On Arts Festival Highlight

No-one will miss out on seeing the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, highlight of the 2000 NZ International Festival of the Arts, thanks to funding from NZ On Air.

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo In New Zealand will screen in prime time, on TV One, on March 25, at 8:00 pm, providing ringside seats for all, said NZ On Air Chief Executive, Jo Tyndall. The Tattoo will also be repeated on Easter Monday at 4:30 pm.

Ms Tyndall said that having the Military Tattoo in New Zealand was great, but for all the people who couldn't see it live, the event would still be a world away if it wasn't for the television coverage.

"Many New Zealanders have Scottish heritage and we have more pipe bands per capita than any other country. Without the television special there would be a great number of disappointed people.

"The fact that it was performed in the new Wellington Stadium, the first time away from Edinburgh Castle, makes it a must-see for a large family audience," said Ms Tyndall.

Being held in New Zealand has meant a record number of participants in the Tattoo are Kiwis.

"More than two thirds of the participants are in fact New Zealanders. They're the sorts of performances that many New Zealanders are involved in, but which rarely get television coverage - such as army bands, marching teams and pipe bands.

"It is wonderful having all these performers in the same place at the same time. Coupled with the added attraction of the Tattoo, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo In New Zealand is sure to be essential viewing," said Ms Tyndall.

NZ On Air has allocated $40,000 to TVNZ for production of the 90 minute special, The Edinburgh Military Tattoo In New Zealand
