Major New Zealand Publishing House Announces $10,000 Scholarship

Random House New Zealand announced on Wednesday 15 March, the launch of a scholarship to the value of $10,000 for an emerging writer. The announcement was made at a party held in Wellington during the NZ Post Writers & Readers Week. The party celebrated the 10th birthday of Random House's prestigious imprint, Vintage.

The scholarship is an award to an emerging writer to assist them in furthering their writing career. The scholarship takes the form of a one-off payment of $10,000 to be presented to one chosen applicant.

Random House New Zealand is delighted to announce that Bill Manhire will be the judge of entries. Bill Manhire's name is synonymous with quality writing in New Zealand, with many New Zealand writers having passed through his creative writing courses and with a score of his own award-winning publications. "It is wonderful to be involved in a scholarship from an international publishing house that shows such commitment to local writers. It is also exciting that this scholarship is open to writers of fiction and non fiction. Who knows, we may discover the next `Bruce Chatwin', " Manhire said.

Random House launched the paperback imprint, Vintage, in 1990. Since its launch, Vintage has become a vibrant and much applauded list both internationally and in New Zealand, with such authors as Salman Rushdie, Rose Tremain, J M Coetzee, Janet Frame, Alan Duff and Dame Fiona Kidman. New Zealand Vintage Publisher, Harriet Allan, says of the Vintage 10th Birthday Scholarship, "Presents are always given on birthdays, so it's great to be giving this one to a new writer to mark the 10th year of Vintage."
