Media Release

Inner City Ministry dishes up 37,000 meals annually

During the Great Depression, the Methodist Mission Northern's meal service dished up 8,000 meals a year. It now serves 37,000 meals annually.

This week's episode of Heart & Community focuses on the Methodist Mission Northern’s Inner City Ministry and Airedale Community Centre, including the meal service.

The meal service provides meals three times a day for those who live on Auckland City’s streets, in parks or in low cost accommodation in surrounding suburbs.

The Methodist Mission has been offering care to those in need from its Town Hall site for over 150 years. Several Mission services are featured in this week’s programme, including the Money Management Budgeting service, which is the only one of its kind in Auckland.

Also discussed is the unique Safe banking programme run by the Mission. Operating with a turnover of $5m per year, the programme provides banking for those unable to open accounts elsewhere.

Wednesday’s half-hour programme also looks at the Mission's furniture and food bank services and the night shelter.

Heart & Community screens on Triangle Television at 8.30pm, Wednesday 21 June.
