mp3.NET.NZ is the first mp3 site devoted to New Zealand music. It gives you the chance to sample the latest in music by local artists, all from the comfort of your home.

Around the world, the mp3 format is growing in popularity and in controversy. According to Wired Magazine around 20 million mp3 files are downloaded every day, by over 50 million capable users. Major technology companies are on the brink of releasing new equipment to make the process even easier.

mp3 is going to change the way we buy our music.

mp3.net.nz is the only mp3 site exclusively devoted to New Zealand music. It offers the perfect opportunity for the recording artists of the future to gain an audience and get ahead, without breaking the bank.

New Zealand bands can load their tracks onto the site at no cost. Visitors to the site can sample the track on a low resolution format, if they like the song they can pay to download it – or order a copy of the CD.

The artists control what tracks get played and how they are presented, they also maintain full ownership of their own music.

What’s the big deal?

Entertainment lawyer Chris Hocquard, who set up the site, believes MP3 is the future of the music industry. “At this point, mp3 is all about promoting and distributing new music – outside the corporate structure. In the long term it will become the mainstream, and the industry will have to adapt.”

How does it actually work?

mp3 compresses normal audio files to about one twelfth of their original size. These files can then be transferred via the Internet with imperceptible loss of quality, and downloaded to hard drive compact disk or mp3 player.
