Third Annual Guitar Award Nominees Span The Styles.

This years New Zealand Annual Guitarist of the Year Award to be held at the Michael Fowler Centre Wellington on November 2, have been announced today.

The four nominees come from a wide variety of guitar playing styles. From contemporary rock, blues, country, soul, jazz the list proves that local talent is as strong as ever and continues to expand the versatility home-grown talent has.

Fretless, acoustic and contemporary electric guitars also indicate that the ‘peer’ choice for the Awards cover the diversity of the instrument as well as player.

The nominees are:

Chet O’Connell. (North Auckland)

The 1993 was nominated for New Zealand Country Music Entertainer of the year and in 1995 he was voted “Top Instrumentalist” by the Variety Artists Club of NZ Inc. Plays old and new rock, blues and jazz.

James Wilkinson: (Christchurch)
James is constantly working throughout Australasia and appears in this years Guitar Festival 2000 concert as a featured artist. A stylist on the fretless guitar his repertoire covers folk, jazz. classical, eastern and medieval music.

Joel Haines: (Auckland)

Jazz and rock are natural territory for Joel who writes, produces and records all his own material. Son of the feared bass player- Kevin Haines, Joel is recognised as one of the county’s top session musicians.

Andy Lynch: (Auckland)

Mention the hottest act in the country at present then the word is ‘ZED’ now a multi platinum recording group that recently competed a ‘sell-out’ national tour., Andy’s magical playing is fast making him a favorite among his peers and his army of fans.

Last year the New Zealand Guitarist of the Year Award was won by Martin Winch (Espresso Guitar).
