THE MALT SHOVEL BREWERY INTRODUCES THE MAD BREWERS The Malt Shovel Brewery, creators of James Squire Original Beers are launching a unique range of beers by a "splinter" group called the Mad Brewers. The Mad Brewers are craftsmen, the fundamentalists of beer and they encompass the passion and dedication involved in creating truly individual brews that true "beer heads" like to drink and savour. The first creation by the Mad Brewers is Australian White Beer and its crisp bite balanced with a zesty dryness makes it ideal for the hot Aussie Summer.White Beer is brewed using the purest Camperdown water, extremely pale malt, fresh wheat and Willamette hops, giving a naturally cloudy appearance and creamy head. There is a tart finish, with hints of orange and coriander on the palate.

QUEENSLANDERS THIRSTY FOR A NEW BREW! Castlemaine Perkins today broke the XXXX mould by launching a crisp wheat beer called Thirsty Dog. Thirsty Dog is the first major brand launched under the XXXX banner since XXXX Gold hit the Queensland market in 1992. The beer has been brewed using a combination of malted barley and wheat, which delivers a crisp smooth taste and an invigorating and refreshing drinking experience. Lion Nathan Head Brewer Bill Taylor says the use of wheat malt in the brewing process helps delivers excellent taste and head retention, as well as a brilliant golden colour. “Wheat beers have tremendous thirst quenching properties, which make them an ideal for Queensland’s hot climate,” Taylor said.

LION THIRSTS FOR EVERY LAST DROP OF MONTANA Lion Nathan may yet swoop on the whole of Montana to protect its valuable wine asset from overseas predators. The transtasman brewer yesterday allowed the Commerce Commission to publicise its application for clearance to acquire all the shares in Montana it does not already have. Lion Nathan owns 28.2 per cent of New Zealand's largest wine company http://brewing.co.nz/news/businessherald/20001122lionmontana.htm

CHINESE BREWER MOUNTS ATTACK China's best-known brewer, Tsingtao Brewery, is making a grab for market share in Shanghai that could impact on both Lion Nathan and Brierley Investments. The brewery, now the No 3 provider of beer to Shanghai, will launch a new beer called Huadong this month at a price of about 1.7 yuan (50c) a bottle. Suntory, its biggest rival in the city, costs 2.5 yuan. Tsingtao plans to make 30,000 tonnes of Huadong a year at the plant in Songjiang district that it bought from Carlsberg in August. http://brewing.co.nz/news/businessherald/20001121lionchina.htm

SIX EXECUTIVES PAID LION'S SHARE Lion Nathan chief executive Gordon Cairns maintained his $2.2 million pay packet last year, according to the company's annual report. That made Mr Cairns New Zealand's highest paid executive last year - or at least highest among those required to disclose what they earn. http://brewing.co.nz/news/businessherald/20001121lion.htm

CASCADE POURS A PREMIUM LIGHT Mr Bonner says the brew also represents great value in the 375ml green bottle, 30ml more than most beers and equivalent to nearly two extra bottles in every carton. Recommended retail price is $8.95 for a six pack of Cascade Premium Light. So, with summer knocking on the front door and the BBQs being dusted off, the timing appears right for the light version of the Tasmanian Tiger to take to the New Zeaiand market. http://www.brewing.co.nz/20001117cascade.htm

BIG BARREL OF FUN WITH WEST END!! South Australia Brewing has launched the latest in beer innovation – the 5 litre West End Draught Big Barrel, which comes complete with its own tap dispenser. Just 21,000 Big Barrels have been produced and they are set to become a collector’s item this festive season. SA Brewing Managing Director Bob Baily said the trade response had been amazing. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm for this product from hotels and bottle shops – the market is obviously crying out for something new,” Mr Baily said.

DB result raises spirits all round DB Group shareholders received a double dose of good news when the company voted to return $151 million to stockholders and announced a positive earnings result for the year to September. Over the year, the group has slashed staff from 1280 to 500, and reduced assets from $372 million to $185 million. While costs have come down, the business also received a fillip from the America's Cup, millennium celebrations and the introduction of beer into supermarkets. Managing director Brian Blake said the group was selling around 20 per cent of its packaged beer into supermarkets, and that was expanding four of DB's premium brands - Heineken, Tui, Monteith's and Export Gold - despite a flat beer market overall. http://brewing.co.nz/news/businessherald/20001116db.htm

MORE MIXERS MAKE UP FOR BEER LOSSES Beer sales have gone down the gurgler for many smaller Wellington liquor merchants in the year since supermarket sales began. But the loss has been offset, at least in part, by strong growth in sales of "ready to drink" (RTD) spirit mixes popular with young people. http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,502818a13,FF.html

SAMUEL ADAMS by Dr Russell Keast A new premium lager has recently been released on the New Zealand beer market. It is Samuel Adams Boston Lager produced by the Boston Beer Company in the U.S.A.. The brewery proclaims to produce the Worlds Most Award Winning Beers. Backing up that claim, Samuel Adams did well in the New Zealand beer awards earlier this year, and they have also had success in Australia, Europe and the U.S.A. By entering competitions all around the world, they have become the 'most winning brewery', however it doesn't mean their beer is better than local brews such as Emerson's, it merely means they just enter more competitions. Proclaiming yourself the one of the best can be very hard to live up to. Given the marketing build up, how does the Boston Lager match up? http://www.realbeer.co.nz/library/authors/keast-r/samadams.html
