********************************************************** DIPPING GLASSES IN LIQUOR FLOOD BY DITA DE BONI "Blokey" beers continued their decline. Premium brews - prettily packaged, of course, because the female psyche is never that well understood - boomed.

But we are still drinking much less beer than in the past. Luke Nicholas, editor of realbeer.co.nz, says traditional volumes have dropped for health reasons.

"Let's face it, 10 jugs a night can't be good for you.

"The drinker still has the same amount of money to spend on a smaller quantity of beer, so he decides to drink better quality.

"Therefore, the traditional beer drinker moves from his Lion Red or DB Draught to a beer with a high perceived quality and image, like Steinlager or Export Gold, then sees there are still more choices and moves to Heineken or Stella Artois," says Nicholas.

"From here, it's anyone's guess as the market is becoming more and more segmented with different brands and styles."

About 12 per cent of all beer was sold through supermarkets last year, with these outlets commanding around 20 per cent of all packaged beers. But despite some fairly creative efforts by breweries to keep beer sexy - Lion Nathan's beer cafes and a rash of speciality brews, for example - beer volumes have remained flat at about 4 million hectalitres, or 81 litres a person each year. http://www.brewing.co.nz/20010112dita.htm

FREE BEER PROPOSAL TO FIX GST PROBLEM Free beer vouchers and a price cut in over-the-bar sales may be offered by hotels and clubs to compensate drinkers for the post-GST beer price rise. The major brewers are working on plans to refund the money in the expectation that the Howard Government's increase in the beer excise will be declared illegal when Parliament resumes. Both houses of Federal Parliament must ratify the excise rise by midnight on June 20 to make it legal retrospectively. http://www.theage.com.au/news/2001/01/14/FFXV2GV5WHC.html

AUSTRALIAN FIRST HALF PUB BEER SALES DOWN 4% ON TAXES Lion Nathan Limited, Australia's No. 2 brewer, said the amount of beer sold in Australian pubs and bars fell 4% in the six months that ended December 31 from the same period a year ago due to higher beer taxes, according to a January 11 Bloomberg report. Lion Nathan stated that the fall was due to government taxation introduced July 1 which increased the price of packaged beer by 1.9% while increasing draft beer served in a pub or bar by as much as 9%. More than one-third of all beer sold in Australia is sold in pubs and bars. Lion Nathan and rival Australian brewer Foster's Brewing Group say Prime Minister John Howard broke his promise that beer would rise a uniform 1.9%.

BEER FINDS A NEW RIVAL IN QUENCHING THIRSTS We still love our beer, but pre-mix spirits in bottles and cans are capturing a share of the alcohol market, thanks partly to the GST and a new tax regime which means all drinks with an alcoholic content of less than 10 per cent incur the same excise. Previously, beer and fermented wine pre-mix drinks enjoyed a tax advantage over distilled pre-mix spirits, despite their having the same alcoholic content. Due to the tax changes, prices fell by as much as 60 to 70 cents a unit for such distilled drinks as bourbon and cola and rum and cola. Fermented drinks such as cider and wine coolers actually increased in price. http://www.theage.com.au/news/2001/01/15/FFX52IBLXHC.html

BUBBLES BEST FOR BEER LOVERS Beer drinkers are choosy about foam on their beverage, and getting the foam right is an important selling point for brewers, according to Charles Bamforth, Anheuser-Busch professor of brewing science at the University of California, Davis. "There's no question foam is important to consumers, but what are the attributes that make it important?" said Bamforth. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2001/01/010108072942.htm

A-B TO STOP SELLING BUD LIGHT IN U.K. London-based Anheuser-Busch Europe Ltd. stated that it will stop selling Bud Light low alcohol beer in the United Kingdom due to low sales, according to a January 11 Bloomberg report. "Consumer attitudes to lighter beers did not move as quickly as we anticipated," said the company in a faxed statement. "We will continue to look at the brand and its place in the UK market." Anheuser-Busch has been expanding internationally through the purchase of stakes in foreign breweries to contract brew and distribute Budweiser locally. The company runs its own brewery in the U.K. Budweiser is currently Britain's No. 2 premium lager.

STATS Crown Lager accounts for about a quarter of all premium beer consumption in Australia. Cascade Premium Lager sales increased 60 percent above its December levels the previous year. Canned beer production in NZ fell 9% for 12 months to September 2000 Bottled beer (under 400ml) increased 14% in the same period
