XPORT SHIPMENT OF NZ MICRO BEERS TO GERMANY Nelson
export company, Duncan Schneider International has just sent
a container of NZ and Pacific Island Boutique beers to
Germany. In true ‘Coals to Newcastle’ fashion, NZ beers will
feature in a German Specialist shop – House of 121 Beers,
where it will be sold and distributed around Europe. The
shipment gives small breweries opportunity and feasibility
to export and feature their beers, by being part of this
combination shipment. Included in the container are beers
from: Founders Brewery - Nelson Bean Rock, Pilot Bay –
Auckland Monteith’s – West Coast Harrington’s – Christchurch
DB Mainland - Timaru Pink Elephant – Blenheim Royal Beer
Company – Tonga Vailima Beer – Samoa Vanuatu Breweries -
Vanuata
TOOHEYS LAUNCHES LO-CAL BEER "For beer drinkers out there watching their weight, Tooheys Maxim will provide them with a beer they can enjoy with their mates that also has less calories than regular full strength beers," Davidson said. The low calorie beer segment in Australia is sized at less than 1% of the beer market but Tooheys is encouraged by the category's success in the United States where it is accounts for more than 40%. http://www.bandt.com.au/article_view.asp?id=4990
GUINNESS DENIES IT'S LEAVING DUBLIN The Irish government has bought the hop store and surrounding buildings on Guinness' 60-acre brewery site for £15 million, adding to speculation that Guinness is are planning to move out of Dublin city, where it has operated for the past 240 years. http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-001465.html
HEINEKEN MOVES INTO GERMAN MARKET The Dutch brewer, the second largest in the world behind Anheuser Busch, will own 49.9% of the new company with Schörghuber unit Bayerische BrauHolding controlling the rest. The company, to be called BrauHolding International, plans to export Paulaner Weiss -- using Heineken's sales and distribution network to market the beer around the world. http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-001466.html
BELGIAN GOVERNMENT BACKS INTERBREW Belgium will take the U.K. government to the European Court of Justice for blocking beer giant Interbrew's to buy the Bass brewing interest. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) last month ordered the Belgian brewer to sell all of Bass' U.K. interests in one package. http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-001463.html
MICHAEL JACKSON’S LATEST ARTICLE – RODENBACH UPDATE The famous Belgian brewery Rodenbach is working on plans which, if they are successful, will surprise and delight devotees of its sweet-and-sour Grand Cru. I hope to have more news before the end of the year. http://www.beerhunter.com/documents/19133-001460.html
PRIDE OF THE SOUTH - AND EUROPE? by Geoff Griggs At last week's Wellington launch, Lion Breweries' Technical Director, Donald Nelson, proudly introduced Southern Cross Wheat Beer; the fourth in Lion's Brewmaster's Selection series of limited edition tap beers. The inspiration for the new beer clearly comes from the popular Belgian witbier (white beer) style. Spiced with crushed coriander seed and the bitter peel of Curacao oranges, beers like Hoegaarden White, Wieckse Witte and Limburg Witbier have become hot favourites around Wellington this summer. Such is this style's appeal Hoegaarden Witbier is now the biggest selling beer at Leuven, the city's specialist Belgian beer café. http://realbeer.co.nz/library/authors/griggs-g/200102speights.html
APPEAL TO THE MASSES by Bruce Holloway When Heineken was recently voted "Auckland's Best Beer" by readers of Metro magazine, my initial reaction was one of derision. Was this just a case of Aucklanders being too embarrassed to admit Lion Red is actually the beer they consume most, I wondered. Nevertheless Heineken, once considered exclusively a posh, "uptown beer", apparently wiped the field in the 20,000 votes cast. So perhaps it's time to reassess the widening appeal of what used to be our premier "snob" beer. http://realbeer.co.nz/library/authors/holloway-b/20010206heineken.html
