ONE SWALLOW DOES NOT A STUNNER MAKE Conrad holds the glass up again, sips just the smallest amount and pauses, concentrating hard. Then, unlike one of his wine-tasting counterparts, he swallows. Conrad had earlier informed me that a beer's bitterness can only be sensed by swallowing, although I secretly suspect that the judges are so passionate about beer that they can't bear to spit it out. http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,746392a1932,FF.html

THE ALE FILE by Luke Nicholas Wanaka Brewski – Supreme Champion 2000 The beer is a good local example of the Czech Pils style, made famous by Pilsner Urquell. Pale gold coloured beer with a citrusy aroma greets you as you pour the beer into a glass. The aroma has a hint of grapefruit. The beer has a firm body, with malt providing a soft, delicious balance with spicy hop bitterness. Refreshing, satisfying and moreish. http://www.realbeer.co.nz/library/alefile/wanakabrewski.html

IT'S 20,000 LAGERS UNDER THE SEA A sunken treasure of thousands of bottles of beer has brought out scavengers on the NSW North Coast, with some locals donning scuba gear to illegally recover the grog. Tweed Heads police Inspector Stan Single said residents thought it was "open slather" and have spent the Easter weekend diving for the beer. One person is believed to have recovered 400 bottles of Hahn Premium. http://www.theage.com.au/news/2001/04/17/FFXZAIX3LLC.html

GUINNESS WORKERS STRIKE IN IRELAND Over 1000 Guinness brewery workers in Ireland went on strike Thursday interrupting production at breweries in Dublin, Dundalk, Waterford and Kilkenny, according to an April 12 Associated Press story. Strikers from five unions are protesting the company's planned April 27 closing of the Dundalk packaging plant which will cost 150 Irish jobs. Local pubs have stocked up on Guinness stout and Harp lager in anticipation of a weeklong strike. Anheuser-Busch's Budweiser beer is also brewed on contract at the Irish facilities.

Guinness estimated that the strike could cost the company $18 million per week in lost business, mostly in Ireland. Guinness did not state whether it plans to import Guinness products into Ireland from Britain, which is unaffected by the strike.

GUINNESS STRIKE SUSPENDED IN IRELAND The strike against Diageo Plc's Guinness brewery was lifted after only 15 hours following a breakthrough in talks conducted by the Irish Republic's Labor Relations Commission, quelling fears of a Guinness shortage in Ireland, according to April 13 Reuters report. Production of Ireland's famous stout, as well as other beers produced at the four Irish brewing facilities in Dublin, Waterford, Kilkenny and the plant slated for closure, Dundalk, will resume "very quickly." Talks between the estimated 1100 to 2000 striking workers from five unions and the Labor Relations Commission will resume on Thursday. The strike was held in response to Guinness' planned closing of the Dundalk packaging plant. "We agreed to suspend the strike, and the company agreed to put back its closure date," said John Kane branch secretary of Ireland's largest union SIPTU in Dundalk.

SHARES IN AUSTRALIA'S FOSTERS HIT NEW ALL TIME HIGH Melbourne -- Foster's Brewing Group Ltd. shares soared to a new record high in April, with beer and wine stocks trading up 14 cents to a record $5.29. AsiaPulse newswire reports that industry analysts cite the nearly 3% gain as being driven by multiple factors: a favorable impact of falling Australian currency, appreciation for their $2.9 billion Beringer Wine Estates acquisition and a current rush to defensive stocks. Beringer contributed $63.7 million to earnings for the first three months of the year for in interim net profit of $267.1 million. Foster's denies having received an offer from British spirit giant Diageo in January. However, there is ongoing speculation of a joint bid by British spirit giant Diageo and UK brewer Scottish & Newcastle plc. This could also be assisting the stock.

GIRLS SHOULD STEER CLEAR OF WINE WOMEN who drink beer have a better chance of matching their male drinking buddies drink for drink, while those who have wine and whisky get drunk more quickly than the lads, a new study shows. Although these results suggest that women could hold their own against men when drinking beer, the researchers don't recommend it. Other studies have shown alcohol has a more severe effect on the liver and other organs in women than in men, they say. http://www.newscientist.com/newsletter/news.jsp?id=ns228734
