Dell - An Installation By Stella Brennan

May 30 June 9
Lightbox Exhibition Space
492 Karangahape Road
Opening 6pm Tuesday May 29

Cargo Cult HQ
In the absence of the cash to indulge her software and hardware fantasies Stella Brennan fetishises the husks of hi-tech gadgets. She obsesses over the periphery of the commodity, hoarding bubble wrap and corrugated card. Her polystyrene, rubber and fluorescent light sculpture has recently been seen at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth and is coming soon to the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.

Her installation at Lightbox Gallery in Auckland¹s Karangahape Road is Cargo Cult HQ. Dell is a glowing, spooky, shiny world of weirdly familiar objects, scrawled walls, abandoned x-rays and piles of techno-crud reverentially lit or gaffer taped into glowing nests. Massed language-lab style headphones whine at a listening-post around a huge wonky glyph painstakingly copied from a computer carton.

Dell is part reeducation centre, part hideout; a dream of a lost world of perfect information and abundant leisure as the traffic of K Road grinds by.

Stella Brennan has shown work at Artspace, Auckland; Southern Exposure, San Francisco, and the Physics Room, Christchurch. She recently received a New Work Grant from Creative New Zealand.
