AUSTRALIAN BEER CONSUMPTION FELL IN FY2001

Australian beer consumption fell 1.5 percent in the year to June 30 as drinkers switched to other beverages such as pre-mixed alcoholic drinks and spent more money on other leisure activities, executives at the brewers told an industry conference in Melbourne.

STELLA ARTOIS TO LAUNCH BRANDED BARS

IN BEER'S NEW WORLD, THE NEWS IS GOOD AND BAD

by Michael Jackson

The Bad News - 'This is a new round of takeovers, on an unprecedented scale. The big brewers all now see their market as being the world' The Good News - 'While the big guys try with mixed fortunes to create worldwide brands, the most truly international reputations now attend a coterie of products from very small brewers' http://www.beerhunter.com/documents/19133-001567.html

BEER OFFERED AS BOUNTY FOR MAGPIES

Hunters are handing over dead magpies in exchange for jugs of beer at a Te Anau bar. Clint Tauri, owner of The Moose Cafe and Bar in Te Anau, was alarmed by attacks on Fiordland's native birds and decided to reward his customers with a free beer every time they brought in a dead magpie. Since the start of May he had given away more than 200 jugs http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,874452a1640,FF.html

WHAT'S IN A NAME? By Geoff Griggs

Following on from AroMac and Blonde Mac, the iconic Nelson brewery - these days under the guiding hand of Lion Breweries - has just released the third in its series of limited-release beers. Peated Malt Mac is named after its most unusual ingredient, a peat-dried malt similar to those employed by Scottish whisky distillers. At 6%, the beer is clearly intended as a winter warmer. Peated Malt Mac beer pours a reddish copper colour with a head that dissipates quickly; the aroma is of sweet fruity esters and hops, with a whiff of smokiness. Rich in the mouth (but not as full bodied as the label suggests), the palate is bittersweet with toasty, smoky notes followed by a hint of sweetish, spirity alcohol and fruit. The finish is long, mouth filling and fruity, with plenty of alcoholic warmth and hops. www.realbeer.co.nz/library/authors/griggs-g/200107whatsinaname.html

BEERS FOR A COLD WINTER'S NIGHT by Geoff Griggs

Two beers reviewed - Roggen Sunrise; the fifth in the Brewmaster's Selection series and Emerson’s Oatmeal Stout. www.realbeer.co.nz/library/authors/griggs-g/200106coldwintersnight.html

FOR PEAT'S SAKE by Carl Hadler

Whisky and beer are brothers due to this common base ingredient, and therefore it doesn't seem too outrageous an idea to make a beer with peated malt. Saying that, I haven't heard of it being done before and I was pleasantly surprised when Macs released their peated malt beer. http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,870433a3683,FF.html

Howard Davis Review: From Free Press to Fancy Dress - Spielberg's The Post

Stephen Spielberg's The Post is an opportune newsroom drama in which a corrupt Republican president wages war against the "liberal media," as its plucky proprietor risks economic and legal ruin to bring the Pentagon Papers to public light. Its true protagonist is publisher Katharine Graham, a stringently diplomatic businesswoman, reluctantly compelled to take an overtly political stance in the interests of democracy and freedom of the press. Howard Davis Review: The Black Dog of Empire - Joe Wright's Darkest Hour'

On the eve of England's contorted efforts to negotiate its ignominious retreat from Europe and the chaotic spectacle of the Tory party ratifying its undignified departure from a union originally designed to prevent another World War, there has been a renewed appetite for movies about 1940. Howard Davis Review: Anger Begets Anger - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

For fans of what Ricky Gervais termed "number movies" (Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven, Ocean's 11, Se7en), Martin McDonagh's latest offering will be a welcome addition to the roster. The Irish playwright turned screenwriter and director has produced another quirky and darkly comic tragedy that evolves around the futility of anger and grief, retribution and revenge. More>>

Howard Davis: Sexting in George Dawe's Genevieve - Part I

Te Papa's permanent collection includes an enormous oil painting by the English artist George Dawe called Genevieve (from by a poem by S.T. Coleridge entitled 'Love') that was prominently featured in the 2013 exhibition Angels & Aristocrats. Compare the massive immensity of the bard's gorgeously gilded harp with the stubby metallic handle of the Dark Knight's falchion, both suggestively positioned at crotch-level. Dawe's enormous canvas invokes a whole history of blushing that pivots around a direct connection to sexual arousal. More>>

Ethnomusicology: Malian ‘Desert Blues’ Revolutionaries To Storm WOMAD

Malian band Tinariwen (playing WOMAD NZ in March 2018) are a true musical revolutionaries in every sense. Active since 1982, these nomadic Tuareg or ‘Kel Tamashek’ (speakers of Tamashek) electric guitar legends revolutionised a traditional style to give birth to a new genre often called ‘desert blues’. They also have a history rooted deeply in revolution and fighting for the rights of their nomadic Tamashek speaking culture and people. More>>

Gordon Campbell: Best New Music Of 2017

Any ‘best of list’ has to be an exercise in wishful thinking, given the splintering of everyone’s listening habits... But maybe… it could be time for the re-discovery of the lost art of listening to an entire album, all the way through. Just putting that idea out there. More>>
