Film Festival :: Celebrating Maori Independence :: The Declaration Of Independence :: With Independent Maori Film Makers
Sunday, 2nd December, Aotearoa Educators celebrates Maori independence, by showing films produced by independent Maori film makers. Some of the film makers highlighted are Leonie Pihama, Mei Hill, Moana and Tauni Sinclair; Toby Mills and Whetu Fala. The topics include globalisation, colonisation through to contemporary and traditional art practices.
The Declaration of Independence was signed in October 1835. This document was accepted internationally, acknowledging Aotearoa as the independent State of Mäori. Since this time, Mäori have fought to regain sovereignty over guardianship of New Zealand. The film festival is to celebrate the steps we have taken, encouraging the pathway forward.
Free screenings will start at 10am. Repeated screenings to 5pm. Theatre, City Gallery, Wellington 2nd December 2001
