The Crump Family Story – new book tells all

“He had a length of milking machine hose in his hand and I watched in terror as once more he laid into my brother Barry with a merciless thrashing that just went on and on. Barry just lying there, as he always did, and taking it all. Then he turned on me – they really were ferocious blows. The weapon he had chosen was, without doubt, the worst we had ever endured. I yelled, screamed, pleaded, cried and of course, wet myself.”

Colin Crump, the iconic Barry Crump’s brother, has written the true story of what really went on in the family for the first time in his book In Endless Fear, published today by Penguin Books.

Colin’s story is a tragic tale of unbelievable abuse in 1950’s rural New Zealand. He and his siblings were subjected to horrifying violence from their father Wally. Previously only hinted at, this biography finally tells the truth.

Colin survived this upbringing and, in what can only be described as a remarkable achievement, turned away from the violence that threatened to destroy his life to become a successful business man.

He is also a family man, and lives with his wife of 45 years near Auckland. He is proud of his family and that he was able to break the cycle of violence.

“This story was recorded not because there was pleasure in telling it, but rather as an obligation to others who were misinformed or just didn’t know, and having the right to know, since it affected so many lives – separating whole families and for some, their lives in ruin,” says Colin.
