First NZ Fashion Week Celebrated At Te Papa

First New Zealand Fashion Week Celebrated At Te Papa

The First New Zealand Fashion Week, an exhibition celebrating last year’s inaugural Fashion Week, will open at Te Papa on 31 August. New Zealand’s first Fashion Week was held in Auckland in October 2001, and represented an historic episode in New Zealand’s fashion history. This latest display at Te Papa presents some of the highlights of that exciting week.

The exhibition comprises six themes. The first is an introduction to the event and includes a profile of Gubb & Mackie, the Auckland-based menswear designers who held the first show of the event.

The second show to be profiled was created in order to provide international visitors with a taste of uniquely New Zealand fashion. Directed by Style Pasifika producer Stan Wolfgramm, the show featured performance and fashion, which was designed by young Polynesian designers including Lanita Ririnui and Charleen Oliver.

Other themes include couture garments by WORLD, and selected garments from the Zambesi and Nom D shows

The final theme of the exhibition explores three of the dominant `looks’ for Winter 2002, with garments selected from Tanya Carlson, Liz Mitchell, and Sabatini.

The First New Zealand Fashion Week opens in the Eyelights Gallery on 31 August 2002. Admission is free.
