Exciting Electronic Artists At New Bodega 25/9

Exciting Electronic Artists Play LIVE At New Bodega! 25/9

Press release: for immediate release 29/8/2002

the soft sell presents an evening of international electronica

Manitoba & Rotor + An electronic double bill

At the *NEW* BAR BODEGA in Ghuznee street: Wednesday September 25th!

In the tradition of Une Petite Electronique comes more electronic music made and played by real people!

Get your ears ready for the consolidation of Canadian artist Dan Snaith aka Manitoba with Leyton aka Rotor + to present a hemisperical soundclash of heartybeats!

What do you get when you cross a master mathmatician with a sampler? Meet Manitoba!

Until recently, no-one knew who the hell Dan Snaith was. But his debut album as Manitoba, 'Start Breaking My Heart', changed all that with a motherlode of critical bon mots and performances at The Big Chill, an Xposure Live gig for John Kennedy's Xfm show and DJ Luv from the mighty LTJ Bukem, Ross Allen, Andy Weatherall, Gilles Peterson, DJ Food to Pete Lawrence, plus the maximum capacity, double headline gig with Four Tet at London's 93 Feet East in August. Along with Susumu Yokota, Manitoba is The Leaf Label¹s biggest success story.

Despite the club scene reference points, the Manitoba sound is not so easy to pin down. ŒStart Breaking My Heart¹ is a beguiling mix of warmth and melody, deep beats and electronic soundscapes. Says Dan, "although I listen to mostly instrumental music, my favourite music is almost all simple songs with singing: Jim O¹Rourke, Cat Power, Nick Drake, The Free Design... all pretty folky, very melodic stuff. Manitoba is about trying to make simple, folksy melodies the most important thing." Simple? Folksy? That¹s all very well, but what about the Big Daddy Kane swagger that comes through? Somehow, Dan¹s tunes are a sublime mixture of naïveté, spacey splendour and goldplated knuckleduster toughness. Yo.

Manitoba will be performing live off Laptop and DJing at Bodega

Here's what the international press said about Manitoba: "Snaith¹s emotions and creativity run riot. This is beautiful electronic music rooted in pastoral grace of Boards of Canada, Eno, Aphex Twin¹s early ambience... but with its own unique vision" 4/5 The Guardian March 2001

"so fiercely intelligent, yet so lovably playful, so brightly inventive, yet so comfortably familiar that it rebuilds your faith in the power of the margins in an instant... a revelation" 8/10 NME March 2001

"a riot of delicate leftfield anarchy that steamrollers convention and redefines innovation" The Face

"A beguiling mix of free-jazz radicalism, abstract electronic beats, cute folksy melodies, avant-classical experimentalism and sweet pop arrangements. And if that sounds like fairly hard going, then I haven¹t done the record anything like justice, because the beauty of this is that it¹s both wildly inventive and a relaxing dream of an LP to listen to. Sensational" M8/M8, M8 magazine

"electronica vibes that almost caress you with their warmth and super organic rhythmic undercurrents" 4.5/5, DJ

Rotor + Wellington live debut! One of the New Zealands most talented and prolific producers, rotor+ remains a mystery to most, quietly producing some of New Zealand's best electronic music.

He's literally just hopped off the plane from taking the Rotor+ show to The Big Chill festival in the UK, now Leyton is settling back down into producing from his new base in Eastborne... Rotor+ came into existence in 1995 . Based in dunedin rotor+ was asked to contribute a track to the Œon the beaten track¹ cds released by curious records in christchurch in 1996. Since then rotor+ has gone on to appear on many compilations and remix various artists (including seminal NZ band 'the bats' indie stars HDU, and pitch black.)

Rotor+ released the debut album Œaileron¹ on independent label the radiophonics trading company of new zealand. (RTCNZ01) in 2000. Rotor+ supported premier international electonica artist ŒOval¹ on their artspace curated visit to auckland in 1998. Rotor+ has also worked across disciplines collaborating with the artists of indicator studios in auckland to provide sound installations for their biannual shows in their gallery.

At Bodega Rotor + will perform live a treat for the uninitiated!!

What the press have said about Rotor +: "a lot like the feeling of breathing in a coltrane record"

"With this intricate work of ambient electronica, rotor+, again positions themself a notch above most other electronic musicians in New Zealand" smokecds.com
