MAORI SPORTS AWARDS HONOURS MEDIA WORK

Nominations are now being sought for the first ever Maori Sports Media Award of the Year.

The award has been launched by the organisers of the annual Maori Sports Awards in an attempt to encourage more positive and expert reporting on Maori sports, and to improve the depth and quality of Maori sports reporting.

Judge Te Anga Nathan - the chairman of the national Maori journalist's association, Kawea Te Rongo - says a broad range of material will be considered eligible for the award including television or radio programmes, print media articles, public relations activities or feature or short films.

Any person or group may enter their own or another person's work.

"The winning sports entry will have demonstrated a skilful use of the medium, in Maori or in English," Mr Nathan says.

"We're looking for work which has advanced understanding of Maori sporting pride, gone beyond the sensational or trivial treatment of the issues, examined issues in a broader context, and inspired and motivated others to take action."

The winner receives a specially commissioned trophy including a replica which will be presented at the 2002 Maori Sports Awards in Taupo on Saturday, December 7.

Nominations will be recognised from October 30, 2001, to October 30, 2002, and must be received by Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa Charitable Trust by 5pm, Monday, November 4.
