Vodafone id Dunedin Fashion Weekend announces ancillary events

The Vodafone id Dunedin Fashion Weekend is proud to be associated with a week of fashion features and events in Dunedin from 8-14 March 2004.

The week is full of exciting fashion events such as the Arthur Barnett Meridian Fashion Week, The Cleveland Living Arts fashion exhibition and the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Fashion Seminar, all leading up to the Vodafone id Dunedin Fashion Show on Saturday 13 March 2004.

A high profile lineup of fashion industry figures will be speaking at a New Zealand Trade and Enterprise workshop on Friday 12 March, from 1.30pm - 3pm at the Dunedin Art Gallery.

The workshop is being introduced by Paul Blomfield, Creative Industries Sector specialist at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise who has had a 20-year involvement with the fashion industry.

Confirmed speakers at the workshop include global fashion website ‘Lucire’ publisher and co-author of “Beyond Branding” (Kogan Page, London, 2003) Jack Yan. In 2003, Lucire received a Webby Award nomination - the only New Zealand site to do so that year (www.lucire.com).

Fashion designer Doris de Pont needs no introduction to the New Zealand fashion industry. de Pont who prints her own textiles and builds her collections around them, launched the new Doris de Pont brand at L’Oreal New Zealand Fashion Week in October 2003.

Duncan McLean completes the speaker lineup.

Mr McLean has returned to New Zealand after spending ten years working in New York working with Cynthia Rowley, Banana Republic and The Gap. Mr McLean is currently designing for Icebreaker, the New Zealand merino wool clothing brand.

Dunedin’s Arthur Barnett Meridian Fashion Week is a fashionista’s dream of daily fashion shows, make-up demonstrations and prizes for the public throughout the week 8-13 March from 10am to 4pm.

Special guests Paula Ryan and Gary McCormick are in town for the “Support Fashion” evening on Tuesday 9 March where the winners of the Arthur Barnett Triumph Designer Bra competition will be announced.

The Cleveland Living Arts Centre’s fashion exhibition “Rareview - a retrospective of Dunedin fashion design” will feature garments of past collections from Carlson, Mild Red, Nom* D and Tamahine together with Fieke’s Antarctica installation. This is one exhibition not to be missed.

Exclusively arranged for the Vodafone id Dunedin Fashion Weekend in conjunction with the Cleveland Living Arts Centre, the exhibition is free and open to the public from 8-14 March at the Cleveland Living Arts Centre, Level One, Dunedin Railway Station.

The Vodafone ‘Call me Baby’ competition winners will also be in the city showing their designs during Saturday night’s main event.

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise’s fashion workshop is aimed at those working in the fashion industry or with an interest in fashion.

The workshop is being introduced by Paul Blomfield, Creative Industries Sector specialist at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise who has had a 20-year involvement with the fashion industry.

Confirmed speakers at the workshop include global fashion website ‘Lucire’ publisher and co-author of “Beyond Branding” (Kogan Page, London, 2003) Jack Yan.

Jack Yan’s topic looks at the founding of Lucire and the obstacles confronted in a time when dot coms were still viewed with suspicion. He will also touch on the need to brand and why New Zealanders should be not be afraid to stick to their instincts.
