Kiwi Yacht Takes First Blood In Top European Race
St Tropez - France July 13 2004
New Zealand super maxi yacht Alfa Romeo has taken line honours in the first race of the Giraglia Rolex Cup in St Tropez opening the way for a repeat of last year's line honours win in all the in-shore races and the off-shore long distance race in which Alfa Romeo also set a new race record.
"It's the windiest race we've done since last year's Rolex Sydney Hobart Race " said Neville Crichton skipper and owner of Alfa Romeo after taking line honours despite an uncharacteristic navigation error by reigning New Zealand Sailor of the Year.
It had been a picture postcard day on the French Riviera with beautiful blue skies and 5 or 6 knots of breeze and race day dawned to very similar conditions warm and windless.
