Galleries Revitalise Inner City

Art Attack! One Night, Ten Galleries, Seventeen Exhibitions Wednesday, 7 July 2004, 5 – 8 pm

In a unique late night opening early next month, ten leading Christchurch. Galleries will feature important New Zealand and international exhibitions.

“Art Attack! has enjoyed enormous support from the public over the last two years and this year offers another great mix of shows to spark the imagination”, says Warren Feeney, Director, Centre of Contemporary Art.

The ten public and privately operated galleries open this evening will present a range of contemporary and historical painting, photography, sculpture, object art and site specific installation art.

Designed to provide a sense of community, this annual event offers a relaxed environment for art aficionados and novices to appreciate a wide variety of visual arts. It is also an opportunity for people who haven’t visited local art galleries recently to share the gallery experience in the company of others. A free bus will run on 15-minute cycles to four stops connecting the participating galleries, located in the two “art districts” in town, creating another chance to socialise en route.

About Art Attack! Art Attack! is supported by the Christchurch City Council’s Mayoral Forum and funded by the Central City Revitalisation Project. The first event of its kind in the City, the event is now in its third year. The 2004 event takes place as part of the New Zealand Innovation Festival.

Participating Galleries and Exhibitions: Centre of Contemporary Art, 66 Gloucester Street Aotearoa Barbie: a group exhibition examining questions of identity. Doc Ross Being Alone: Photographs Gerda Leenards and Simon Edwards: Fjords, Mist and Waterfalls. Paintings. Untitled: a group exhibition responding to the show's title.
