Cats Of All Sorts On Show At Royal Easter Show

From new breed the Snowshoe, to a cat with extra toes, to the household moggie, cats of all types will be on show at this year’s Royal Easter Cat Show.

Organised by CATZ Inc, the popular feline show and competition is part of the Royal Easter Show on from 24-29 March 2005 at the Auckland Showgrounds.

New or unusual breeds on show and competing for honours this year include the Snowshoe, a semi-longhaired mitted and pointed cat; the Antipodean Shorthair, New Zealand and Australia’s natural cat, like the European shorthair in Europe and the American shorthair in the USA; and the New Zealand Polydactyl, a naturally occurring mutation that causes the cat to have extra toes.

Also in this category are the Skookum, a cross with the short legs of the Munchkin and the long curly coat of the LaPerm; the Maine Coon, the largest pedigree breed weighing up to 10 kilos; the hairless Sphynx; and the Bengal, Jungala, Abyssinian, Exotic, Devon Rex and Scottish Fold.

Alongside these unusual cats will be old favourites such as Persians, Siamese, Burmese and Birman.

The household moggie also features in competitions for ‘companion’ cats, in which they are judged on qualities such as health, personality and presentation rather than to a standard like pedigrees, and will compete for titles such as Supreme Grand Companion.

Visitors to the cat show will be able to take in the judging as it unfolds, and talk to breeders to learn more about cats and specific breeds and how to care for them. Cat and kitten products will also be on sale.

Other features at this year’s Easter festival include international headline acts Shrek 2 and the Powerpuff Girls, and the Weber Brothers Circus which returns after last year’s successful debut. The traditional favourites are also back including the carnival rides, street entertainers, the Royal Easter Show Art Awards and the Royal Easter Wine Show.

Admission is only $30 for a family five, $15 an adult, $5 a child and free for under-2 yrs, which represents good value family entertainment.
